Recently, an Australian vlogger named Amy (@Amy艾米饭) did something that surprised even many locals in Leshan — she spent an entire month studying the rules, practicing the gameplay, and eventually producing an English-language guide titled Leshan 2-7-10: A Beginner's Guide.

So, what exactly is 2-7-10?

“2-7-10”, also known as Qiaozi Pai or Qiaopai, is a traditional Chinese card game native to the Leshan area in Sichuan Province.

Its origins are deeply tied to the salt industry and dockworker culture of Wutongqiao, Leshan. Long bamboo tally sticks were originally used by salt merchants to record goods received and dispatched, as well as to calculate wages — red marks stood for salt, black for coal. During their off-hours, workers would use these bamboo tallies for casual gambling and entertainment.

The game is typically played by three players, each drawing 20 cards. The goal is to form valid melds and reach a winning score. The game is rich in its own jargon — chi, peng, kai , and more. A hand totaling 10 hu (points) is enough to win.

In 2006, 2-7-10 was inscribed into Leshan’s first batch of municipal-level intangible cultural heritage items.

Next time you visit Leshan — perhaps after marveling at the Leshan Giant Buddha — why not find a local teahouse and give 2-7-10 a try? You just might get hooked, too.
